Growing in Messiah

  1. Hi Brother Caleb! Another interesting video. Thank you for taking the time out to put all of this together. ☺ I just had a quick question. I thought that in John 10:22-23 that it was referencing Hanukkah. Is this incorrect? If it’s not, is there any truth to the story of why Hanukkah is celebrated? Is there an actual event that happened that may have been similar?

    Thanks,
    Melissa

  2. Great question Melissa. Yes, I believe it is referencing Hanukkah in John 10:22-23. Just because books in the Apocrypha are not considered to be Scripture doesn’t mean we should throw them out completely. We know there are some historical errors in the Apocryphal books, but the retaking of the temple was a huge and joyous event. Just because I celebrate the 4th of July doesn’t make the declaration of independents part of the Canon.
I certainly believe there are historical truths in some of the apocryphal books. They were held in high regard by many people in the first century, but they should not be considered Scripture and most people in the first century didn’t consider them as such either. Does that help?

    1. Yes, that helps. Thank you! I’ve never read the Apocryphal books. I’ve always been told they are forbidden and only used by the Catholic church to justify their practices. Ive only learned recently that the story behind Hanukkah was in the book of Maccabees. Thank you again for this series. Its been very helpful.
