Tired of hearing the Gospel? I have Good News
Recently, a loved one was defending not attending any church regularly (or ever, if we’re being honest), “I don’t need to hear the gospel again. I already know it.”
We were shocked. This man called himself a Christian. But he didn’t want to be bothered with the practice or preaching that defines us as believers.
Once we entertain the treacherous thought, “I don’t need to hear the Gospel again,” our ego has taken a dangerous turn away from the Almighty. It is in that moment that we need to hear the Gospel more than ever.
Why?
Because of what the gospel does to you. It changes you. When you hear the gospel and heed its message (or if you reject it and turn away from the truth), your response changes you.
Seeing the Gospel Correctly
We must correctly see the gospel for what it is: “It is the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes,” Romans 1:16. The work of the gospel is living and ongoing.
The gospel is our foundation as Christians. But it is not so basic that once we hear it, we move on to “more advanced” theology.
When we hear anew and accept the gospel message of Christ’s redeeming work on the cross and how his sacrifice can put us in right standing with the Almighty, we are acknowledging God’s righteousness in the truth of the Gospel of Jesus Christ. The gospel is an invitation to faith, and as Paul tells us in Romans 10:21, “faith comes from hearing, and hearing though the word of Christ.”
Without first hearing the gospel, we cannot have faith. Faith is necessary to changing the posture of our hearts, from sinful defiance to a willing conformity to God’s Word. Only then can we be reminded of our true place: the place of service and submission to God.
Not “Needing” to Grow
Alternatively, aversion to hearing the Gospel preached because you think you already know everything you need to know means you believe it has nothing to offer you. You have no growing left to do. Instead of good news, it is reduced to yesterday’s news.
How tragic is this mindset? Any “believer” who even thinks this thought has pride barricading them from the humble posture of being able to hear anything and everything the Lord would tell them from the lips of his messengers.
The Good News is the same yesterday, today and forever. There is no better news.
It doesn’t matter how long you’ve been a believer, how educated you are, how devoted you are to your faith. None of us are exempt. You and I need to hear the Gospel anew, read God’s Word, invest time in prayer and worship to our Holy God. By the grace of God, we should expect to do this every day of our lives.
